The Short Answer for Walmart Marketplace Sellers
Walmart is a marketplace facilitator in all 45 sales tax states + DC. Walmart collects and remits sales tax on every Walmart Marketplace sale. So at first glance, you don’t owe direct collection.
But two things still create registration obligations:
- Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS) stores your inventory in Walmart-operated U.S. warehouses — creating physical nexus in those states
- Several states (Texas, Ohio, Nevada, New Jersey, Michigan, Hawaii) include marketplace sales when measuring economic nexus thresholds for direct-sale registration purposes
For a typical cross-border Walmart Marketplace seller using WFS, you owe registration in ~6–10 states (the states with WFS warehouses where your inventory ends up). For Walmart sellers who also use Amazon FBA + Shopify, the combined footprint is typically 25–35+ states.
Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS) Creates Physical Nexus
WFS is Walmart’s equivalent of Amazon FBA — Walmart stores, picks, packs and ships your inventory from Walmart-operated warehouses to deliver fast to customers nationwide.
Walmart’s primary WFS hubs (2026):
- Bentonville, Arkansas (Walmart HQ region — flagship WFS facility)
- Indianapolis, Indiana
- Atlanta, Georgia
- Dallas, Texas
- Phoenix, Arizona
- Sacramento area, California
If your WFS inventory ends up in any of these warehouses, you have physical nexus in that state — registration required regardless of revenue. WFS is more concentrated than Amazon FBA (fewer hubs, more focused on Walmart’s existing distribution network), so the typical Walmart-only seller has nexus in fewer states than an FBA-only seller.

How Walmart’s Marketplace Facilitator Status Works
Walmart’s marketplace facilitator collection is governed by the Walmart Marketplace Tax Collection and Remittance Policy Addendum, which makes Walmart the taxpayer and seller of record for sales tax purposes on every Walmart Marketplace sale.
Practical effects:
- Walmart calculates the correct sales tax at checkout based on the customer’s destination address
- Walmart collects the tax from the customer at the point of sale
- Walmart remits the tax to each state’s Department of Revenue on the state’s filing schedule
- Walmart issues 1099-K reports to sellers for IRS reporting purposes
- Sellers do NOT see the tax money flow through their accounts — Walmart handles it directly
However, Walmart’s marketplace facilitator collection does not eliminate your registration obligation in states where you have physical nexus from WFS inventory. Most states require sellers with physical nexus to file periodic returns (typically zero-tax ‘marketplace’ returns) confirming that all marketplace sales were facilitated by Walmart.
The key states that ALSO include marketplace sales when measuring direct-seller economic nexus thresholds: Texas, Ohio, Nevada, New Jersey, Michigan, Hawaii. In these states, even Walmart-only marketplace sellers can trigger registration just from Amazon + Walmart combined volume.
International Seller Acceptance on Walmart Marketplace
Walmart Marketplace was historically U.S.-only — non-U.S. sellers could not list. That changed in 2024 with the Walmart Cross Border Exchange (also called Walmart Marketplace Cross Border).
Approved international seller markets as of 2026:
- United Kingdom
- Canada
- Mexico
- China
- India
- Select other markets on application
South Africa and EU member states are not currently on the published approval list — SA / EU sellers can apply on a case-by-case basis or work through a U.S. partner entity.
Walmart Marketplace requirements for international sellers
- U.S. EIN — required for Walmart Seller Center tax setup and W-8BEN form
- W-8BEN — exempts you from 30% U.S. withholding on income
- U.S. business identification — historically a U.S. LLC; Cross Border Exchange now accepts foreign entity documentation
- U.S. ACH-capable banking — Wise Business or Mercury for payouts
- Walmart Seller Center approval — typically 2–6 weeks for international applicants

What Cross-Border Walmart Sellers Should Do
Standard playbook for a cross-border Walmart Marketplace seller (typically also using Amazon FBA + Shopify):
- Get a U.S. EIN (call IRS at +1-267-941-1099, M–F 6am–11pm Eastern; same-call issuance)
- Complete W-8BEN on Walmart Seller Center to exempt 30% U.S. withholding
- Open Wise Business or Mercury for U.S. ACH-capable banking
- Apply to Walmart Cross Border Exchange (if eligible — UK, Canada, Mexico, China, India)
- Pull your WFS inventory data from Walmart Seller Center to identify your physical nexus states
- Register for sales tax in every state with WFS inventory + every state where your combined Amazon + Walmart + Shopify sales exceed the economic threshold
- Configure Walmart Seller Center with your state account numbers
- File monthly/quarterly/annual sales tax returns in every state — Walmart-collected sales typically file as zero-tax marketplace returns
- Reconcile Walmart-collected vs Amazon-collected vs Shopify direct-collected sales across all your channels every period
Setup timeline: 4–6 weeks for a first-time cross-border Walmart seller starting from zero.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Does Walmart collect sales tax for me on Walmart Marketplace sales?
Yes — Walmart is a marketplace facilitator in all 45 sales tax states + DC. Walmart calculates, collects and remits sales tax on every Walmart Marketplace sale. You don’t see the tax flow through your accounts. But Walmart’s collection does NOT eliminate your registration obligation in states where you have physical nexus from WFS inventory.
2. Does Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS) create physical nexus like Amazon FBA?
Yes. WFS stores your inventory in Walmart-operated warehouses (Bentonville AR, Indianapolis IN, Atlanta GA, Dallas TX, Phoenix AZ, Sacramento area CA) — physical nexus is created in each of those states. Walmart’s WFS footprint is more concentrated than Amazon FBA, so the typical WFS-only seller has nexus in 5–8 states (vs 15–25 for FBA-only).
3. Can I sell on Walmart Marketplace as a non-US seller?
Yes if you’re in UK, Canada, Mexico, China or India — Walmart’s Cross Border Exchange has approved sellers from those countries since 2024. South Africa, EU member states and other markets are not on the published approval list but can apply case-by-case. South African sellers often work through a partner U.S. entity.
4. Do I need a US LLC to sell on Walmart Marketplace?
Historically yes. Since 2024 the Walmart Cross Border Exchange accepts foreign entity documentation, so a U.S. LLC is no longer strictly required for approved markets (UK, Canada, Mexico, China, India). You will still need a U.S. EIN, W-8BEN, and U.S. ACH-capable banking (Wise Business or Mercury).
5. How does Sales Tax Compliance USA help Walmart sellers?
We handle: EIN application, Wise Business / Mercury setup coordination, multi-state sales tax registration (typically 6–10 states for WFS-only sellers; 25–35 states if you also use Amazon FBA + Shopify), Walmart Seller Center configuration, monthly/quarterly/annual filings, marketplace vs direct sales reconciliation, audit defence. One flat monthly fee.
Walmart Marketplace Is the Easier Marketplace, with One Big Catch
Walmart’s marketplace facilitator collection works exactly as advertised — Walmart handles every dollar of sales tax on Walmart-collected sales. The catch is WFS: storing inventory in Walmart’s warehouses creates physical nexus in those states regardless of revenue, which means registration and periodic zero-tax filings.
For cross-border sellers running Walmart + Amazon FBA + Shopify together (the most common pattern for high-volume international sellers), the combined nexus footprint is typically 25–35+ states.
